Who are we without other people? Do you ever feel like someone else looking is defining who you are at that very moment? Sometimes another person limits your identity just by their gaze. Still, you need the Other to identify who ‘you’ are. In short, the Other is both a necessity and a burden. How then do we deal with this?
During this Philosophy Evening we will talk about this matter by touching upon thinkers like Levinas, Fanon and Bataille. Feel free to join us for what promises to be a wonderful conversation.
About Philosophy Evening
Philosophy Evening is an event where we talk about philosophical topics. You don’t need to read up on anything in advance, as you will get up to speed at the start of the night. After the opening we discuss questions in smaller groups, so everyone gets a chance to share what they think. There is no right or wrong answer. Try to tell why you think something is true (or not) and you will walk out having had wonderful conversations. We rotate between plenary discussions and smaller group conversations to get as much interaction as we can. Welcome to everyone who is interested!
This year Dokhuis’ overarching theme is In the eyes of the Other. During the Philosophy Evening this season, we will pick a theme that relates to this. We hope to deepen our understanding and experience of the Other through these evenings and create just a little bit more awareness about people and things that are around us and influence us.
About the organisers
Kas Molenaar is a philosopher from Rotterdam who one could call a ‘real’ philosopher as he thinks and talks about it day and night. During Philosophy Evenings he will talk about thinkers and books to give everyone there a starting point for wonderful conversations. Amongst his favourites are Heidegger and Bataille.
Christiaan Verheij is a teacher from Sliedrecht with a background in philosophy. During Philosophy Evenings he will host the evening and guide the process as best as he can to make sure everyone can take part in our conversations. With a bit of self-mockery, he’ll try to create a space for open conversations where everyone has a place.
